TONIGHT! Special Event! Laternelaufen! 5:45 Little Park - Matt Julie CK - 11-04-2022

JES Families invite you to participate in our 1st Laternelaufen, Lantern Walk. A wonderful opportunity to participate in cultural traditions. Special thanks to the Arencibia Family!

The school children have already made their lanterns and families will meet in the little park TODAY at 5:45pm for the lantern walk. We will walk the typical loop, mesa/main. Dress warm & feel free to bring a flashlight or just join us for the walk!

Thank you!
JES Family

Brief History:
Legend has it that St. Martin, who was a soldier, used his sword to cut his coat in half to give half of it to a poor man. St. Martin was known for his kindness and was appointed Bishop.
There are several stories as to why there is a lantern walk "Laternelaufen" associated with St. Martin's Day on or around November 11 (St. Martin's memorial).
The one that I was told is that St. Martin 'brought light into the world" with his kindness and so the tradition of the lantern walk was started to share the light and kindness that he portrayed.

Traditionally, children make their own paper lanterns in either school, churches or at home ahead of time. After the sun sets, young and old come together to walk through the town, signing songs and carrying their colorful lanterns.
