Quote:We hope that everyone had a happy Thanksgiving

To Karen Zupko’s friends in Jamestown and the surrounding communities, we wanted to let those who have not heard know that Karen passed away on November 18, 2022. We waited to post this information on the BB, preferring that people learn the news from their friends and community rather than on social media.

We know many in the community who have been there for and with Karen over the years, helping her through losing her home, health challenges, and the laughter and tears. Karen really loved this community and the people comprising it  (ok, maybe not everyone and not all of the time Rolleyes ), and although she can’t thank you herself, we can thank you on her behalf. So thank you very much for all you did for Karen, it was very much appreciated.

For those who do not know, Karen asked Sandy Greathouse and KT Oxford to execute her final wishes.  If you have any questions or requests regarding Karen’s possessions and estate, please feel free to contact them at  Sandy.greathouse@jimtown.org   or ktoxford@comcast.net.

Over the past week, we have heard many wonderful Karen stories.  She was indeed a unique woman. There are tentative plans to hold a memorial event on the Ward Street property in the Spring.  Karen was not a big fan of the cold, and we do not believe she would wish us to gather for her when it is freezing outside.

However, several folks have requested a gathering sooner so that they might lean on one another’s shoulders in this time, share stories and perhaps lift a glass.  Since neither KT nor Sandy are in town, it would be difficult for them to coordinate such a near-term event, although it seems entirely appropriate.  Therefore we hope this message will spur some of our residents with special memories to organize such a gathering.

We thank you again for all of your kind words and actions

Thank you, Burt, for making it official - I wasn't sure who was going to do it. As Karen had no family here and so many took turns helping her, I'd love to gather to remember her informally sooner than May. Maybe on a Tuesday or Wednesday night when there's no official music at the Merc so we can talk and exchange memories, or maybe a Sunday brunch? The holidays are upon us and it might be tough in the next couple of weeks to do it, but if anybody's interested, let's gather here online to find a time and place. Doesn't have to be at the Merc, but since she was such a faithful patron of it, it seems fitting to me. Also, if we wait till after Christmas, that's another idea.

Nancy, I too am very much interested in raising a glass for KZ and sharing stories. I think we just pick a day and do it. You have my email.

Beautiful, Sal - as always, a great shot that really shows the person she was!
