JT EMS is recruiting Volunteers!!!! - Matt Julie CK - 02-01-2023

Opportunity is knocking!

Do you live within Jamestown town limits? Would you like to become more confident in responding to emergency situations? Do you want to be better prepared, in an emergency, to help family and friends? Would you like to make a difference in your community? Maybe this is your first step to advance into a plethora of different careers: medical field, firefighting, adult/child services, etc. Maybe you just want to know what to do if any emergency happens while you're camping!

Here is your opportunity! JT EMS is in dire need of EMS volunteers and we're able to cover your education fees with a 2-yr contract. The 2-yr contract basically means you agree to participate in monthly trainings & respond to calls if you're in town. If you begin the process and don't fulfill the 2-yrs, you'll be asked to repay a portion of your education.

*If you live outside of Jamestown and would like to be trained and volunteer with LHFD please contact David Lindquist (LHFD) for more information at dlindquist@lefthandfire.org

Opportunities:
Nederland FD & Coal Creek FD is offering a quick 4 week training opportunity to become a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) aka First Responder. This is the first step of emergency medicine and minimum requirement for JT EMS (mandated by our Boulder County medical director). Nederland is also going to offer an EMT certification this Fall '23. (second step in emergency medicine, not required for JT EMS but supported).

Interested Community members choose 1 program to attend:
Nederland Fire Dept.
When: March 5-April 5 Monday, Wednesday & Sundays
Time: Mon/Wed-6-9; Sun 9-5 NO CLASS 3/26, 3/27 & 3/29 (BVSD spring break)
Who can join/take the class: Anyone 16+ (16-17y.o will be in a JR EMS role, contact me for more information)

Coal Creek Fire Dept.
When: March 21-April 29
Time: Tues. & Thurs 6-10PM & 4-Sat TBD
Who can join/take the class: Anyone 16+ (16-17y.o will be in a JR EMS role, contact me for more information)

People have shared their fears when thinking about joining JT EMS; not feeling comfortable, being overwhelmed, etc. I promise, YOU CAN DO THIS! Plus it's great knowledge to have!

Reality of our community's situation:
Many people for many years (~40+ years ) have volunteered their time and energy to JT EMS, they have since moved or retired. (THANK YOU to all of the current and past volunteers!) If we, as a community, value having trained and certified community members be able to respond to an emergency situation VERY QUICKLY, while waiting for transport to an emergency room or needing advanced life support services, then we, the community, need to participate and become that volunteer crew. The more community members sign up and become trained, the merrier, as it helps to cover vacations and unavailabilities.

Basic info:
-Our dept. usually receives >12 calls a year.- We are responsible for any EMS 911 between 87J & the confluence (Lefthand & James canyon)
-We have a contractual agreement: Automatic Mutual Aid with LeftHand Fire/EMS Dept. as well as AMR ambulance services-we never transport patients.
-The majority of calls require Basic Life Support (BLS), which means advanced life support (ALS) is usually not needed ie drugs, IV's, etc. However, assuming JT EMS is first on scene and the emergency requires ALS, then the paramedics or advanced EMT's from LHFD or AMR will fulfill that role upon their arrival.
-Our very important role, which you will be trained, will primarily be addressing any immediate needs, patient comfort & gathering information-until LHFD arrives with ALS, as well as the ambulance/life flight arrival for transport.

Some of the IMPORTANT tasks we do:
-Be the 1st on scene (studies show the quicker care has begun, the better the end result- this includes gathering info and assessing the situation)
-Determine what is actually happening/why was 911 called, etc-communicate updates to dispatch over the radio
-Obtain blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, patient level of consciousness & maybe glucose readings (this could be multiple times while you're there-these allow you to get a baseline and then document and observe any changes)
-Get Patient history-including medications
-Filling out patient forms passing on all info to transport crew (this allows them to do their job more efficiently)
-Keep patient and surrounding area CALM while waiting for transport
-Traffic control/crowd control
-Assisting LHFD & AMR

What is expected from a volunteer after you're trained (2-yr contract):
-Understand and follow Boulder County Medical Protocols (all the duties of the different emergency medicine levels are clearly documented)
-Attend skills based monthly trainings w/LHFD (every 4th Wed of each month 6-9PM location switches every month between LHFD station 1 & JT station)
-Respond to calls when available; complete documentation, debriefs, etc
***NEVER, NEVER respond to a call under the influence***
-In the beginning, we'll have a couple additional JT EMS trainings to go over radio communication, the truck, equipment, storage, etc
-Keep fire house & equipment cleaned, stocked and ready to go

General examples of an EMR on scene duties in addition to the assessment of the patient's situation:
If the patient: Has difficulty breathing-place in position of comfort & typically give them oxygen; Bleeding-stop the bleed/pack the wound; Broken bones-some specific strategies but mostly place in position of comfort and protect area (we do not try to set bones); Unconscious not breathing-CPR/defibrilator; etc. then AMR/Life Flight arrives for transport and assumes care of patient.
