For Bear-resistant trash can recipients: an optional survey is available - Michelle - 11-02-2023

If you purchased a bear-resistant trash can last spring, you may have recently received a social science survey from Cassandre Venumiere-Lefebvre, a PhD student from Colorado State University's Center for Human-Carnivore Coexistence. Cassandre worked on a similar effort related to the the Durango Black Bear Study, and agreed to help us gather feedback. Skim your inbox from ~Oct. 20, if you're willing to help Cassandre with her research project. Your responses will help us improve the distribution program, which will offer cans to Nederland residents next year.

If you are like me and loathe getting nagged about surveys, and loathe nagging others about surveys, the upside is if 1/3 of recipients fill out the survey, there won't be an email reminder in 2.5 weeks. I filled mine out as soon as it arrived for that reason, and because Cassandre is a very nice person and her project is pretty cool.

If you've read this far, here's some bear-related intel from a recent meeting:
~Currently, Boulder has an extremely high density of bears feeding on trash and urban fruit trees. More than 15 were spotted during a recent drive through town.
~Like most wildlife, bears who become accustomed to visiting human developments have a much higher mortality rate, for example, 4 recent deaths were related to electrocution on powerpoles and vehicle strikes.
~So far, there have been more vehicle strikes than last year on highway 36, with 2 south of Boulder and another 8-10 from Boulder to Loveland
~No bear tags were filled in the area from Lefthand to Brainard Lake this season, but around 5 were taken last year.
~How does all of this figure into the lower level of bear activity so far this year...it's just food for thought.

Drive safe, and thanks for locking up your trash.
