Jamestown 1890’s - Wendystokes - 12-02-2023

Jamestown 1890’s, possibly before the flood of 1894? The Mercantile had arrived by 1906 as seen in a photo in “Mountain Memories” with that date.

Love these old pics. That's an oldie!

My first impression was that most of those men were wearing heavy wool suits, vests, hats, and probably wool long handles.  Not inappropriate for this time of year, or in the fall when I'd guess the image was taken.  My second impression is that there appears to be no women in the photo.  Golly, what a lonely existence!

I love these old photos! There is a guy on the left whose head appears to have exploded. And there is a translucent in front of the ladder.

This photo is in the bathroom of the current Merc. You can see that the roof line (and height) don’t seem to appear in any of the buildings in the first photo.

A couple of views of Jamestown in the late 1800s/early 1900s from the hills above.  Not many trees.

The trees were cut for lumber to build the town and provide fuel for heat.

I would imagine quite a few were also used to make mine timbers. SvH
