Ticks - Kdkarin - 06-29-2024

My 14 year old pup Snoopy started developing weakness in his back legs which rapidly progressed to him not being able to stand or even hold his head up. He was limp, like his whole body was paralyzed. Fearing he had a stroke, I remembered seeing the post on here about VEG ER in Boulder next to Trader Joe's and how wonderful they were. As I was holding him trying to rush out the door, I felt something in his armpit. It was a huge tick. Freaked out I removed it and continued on. By the time we got to the ER he was completely limp, not able to move. They did labs, vitals and even an ultrasound which were all normal. After telling the doctor about the tick, he said he doesn't see many cases but animals can develop tick paralysis and the remedy is removing it immediately. They should improve within 24-72 hours. They gave him fluids and I opted to take him home to love on him fearing the worst. Within hours of being home, he ate a little, drank water and was able to stand well enough to walk outside to go to the bathroom!! This morning he's acting like nothing even happened!! I wanted to pass on the information because I've never heard of this and it's s the first tick I've seen on him. I know it's the season and they are everywhere so I will be vigilantly checking them daily. Thank you for posting about VEG ER on here, they were so caring and compassionate! They are the best and I would definitely recommend them in an emergent situation since they are open 24/7.

I use Frontline Tick meds on my GSD Lila.  Spring through Fall.  No ticks, No toks.  Thanks for sharing the info.  Good to know!

Yes thank you, getting that today!!

Wow, thanks for sharing that about tick paralysis! I'm so pleased to hear that Snoopy's okay!

So glad Snoopy is ok!  I've never heard of that either- thank you for sharing.  The Frontline tick meds are definitely a great way to go (we started in late April I think, ticks seemed to come early this year) I'd like to also add that VEG is the best!  Amazing experiences when my cat broke his femur, and when Blue dog had a bear encounter and needed stitches.

We had a dog who had tick paralysis years ago.  Same symptoms.  An ER vet discovered the tick and removed it, and the dog was okay in a few hours.  Scary!  (He was on tick meds at the time, too).
