Freeze Your Food Trash!!! - Laura Williams - 07-31-2024

It's a sure-fire way to prevent your trash from stinking!  If your trash doesn't stink, you eliminate the food source and bears won't be interested.  Use gallon-size ziploc bags and freeze all your food scraps.  You may find that you have a lot of ziplocs at first, but within about 2 weeks, you will find that you will eat most of what you cook and you'll have fewer ziplocs taking up freezer space.  Take the ziplocs out and add them to your regular trash on trash day.  Since it is frozen, it will take some time to thaw and start stinking.  Better yet, take 'em down to Ecocycle compost!  I used to freeze my food scraps when we lived in the mountains and continue doing so while living in the flats because I hate stinky trash!  Lo' and behold, there are now bears in Longmont and critters of all kinds are not interested in my non-stinky trash bins.  I also rinse anything that might stink before putting it into the trash (i.e. paper plates with food remnants, those styrofoam trays that meat comes on, etc.)

Oh - and stop with bird feeders of all types!  Day or night, it's best NOT to feed the wildlife!

Keep up the great work in Saving Our Bears, Jimtown!  I miss y'all!
