RE: MOUNTAIN FOOD RESCUE - O'B's - 11-26-2024 Hi MFR helpers and leaders. Thank you for the amazing work you do! Unfortunately, this isn't going to be high praise, although I do want to recognize and commend your efforts. Last night as I was returning home, and preparing to back into my driveway, a program participant was flashing their headlights incessantly trying to get me to move, and they were travelling quickly on lower main. I backed into my driveway, and let the guest wait. I also had to install a new battery in my personal truck and wanted to beat the incoming weather, so I came back outside with an assortment of tools to complete the task. What I observed was somewhat disturbing. Lower main has a posted speed limit of 10 mph. It's a dirt 2 track and the dust rises easily. Those of us living here know and have accepted that fact, and we appreciate the speed limit of 10 to try to control the dust, as well as the use speed. Last night there were a number of vehicles travelling above the speed limit, both into and out from the rescue. And I've noticed this regularly. For a while the residents had a sign in the road reminding users that the speed limit is still 10, and we mean it. Especially with the time change, lower main residents are getting home from work and walking their dogs etc in the now dark. What I will ask, and my neighbors are free to join me, is that we continue to remind all of the recipients of this generosity that lower main is a residential street in Jamestown, and it has a posted speed limit of 10. I understand the desire to be home at the end of a long day, and we're all in a hurry, however that doesn't excuse bad manners. Likewise I was ashamed to hear that some of the recipients who do not live in Jamestown proper were being told that the service was only for residents of Jamestown. If memory serves, the mission was to rescue food that is destined for the dumpsters at retail grocers and help ensure that we reduce food waste as a whole. If the folks who aren't from Jamestown are abiding by the speed limit and they are helping the project of reducing food waste, I'd say they are welcome. RE: MOUNTAIN FOOD RESCUE - RandyO - 11-26-2024 A simple but effective Slow Down are "topes" As used in Mexico -- ___[ ]___ concrete square "Slow Down or Buy tires" are Very effective and need no maintainence. A warning sign should suffice, and $$$ for tires will send the message. No sympathy ! RE: MOUNTAIN FOOD RESCUE - RandyO - 11-26-2024 And YES --- i'm the Old Phq who gets to whine about All you 5hits who MUST get home 46 seconds earlier ?? Either enjoy Where you are or Please go enjoy being somewere else. Lives Are too short ! From a Youngster, who has only enjoyed this BEAUTIFUL Town for 52 years. And Happy Thanksgiving !!! RE: MOUNTAIN FOOD RESCUE - Matt Julie CK - 11-27-2024 Reply to OB: Hey Chris. Thank you for that unfortunate information. Yes- Participants: we ALL need to SLOW DOWN We will be sure to share this information and remind people of the speed limit and common courtesy behaviors that are expected as we graciously combat food security issues. Regarding which participants are allowed to receive food: The food pantry is run under The Jamestown Area Community Foundation. This foundation was setup to serve all residents from peak to peak to the confluence of James and Lefthand. Once in awhile we’ll get someone from Longmont or Boulder that may have heard about us- but it is gently explained that after that night they will no longer be allowed to shop here due to the restrictions of our bylaws from the foundation. Of course our volunteers are passing on information of other pantry’s in their own neighborhoods. I hope this information helps. Again we will be sure to address the speeding issues with volunteers and shoppers. If anyone has any other slow down tactics or suggestions (besides Randy’s damaging tires ). PLEASE LET US KNOW. We’re always looking for solutions to issues Thanks again for the input. Happy Thanksgiving CommUNITY ~Juls RE: MOUNTAIN FOOD RESCUE - O'B's - 11-27-2024 Thanks Julie! If we can self regulate that's for the best for sure. And thanks for the explanation on the charter. The reason I know someone was turned away is because one of the recipients, and the one who was asked to stop coming is one of our firefighters (Lefthand). There are actually two of them that I know of that take advantage of the mission of the food rescue who don't currently live in the zone, and we have other responders who live in the zone who do rescue food. Both of the ones turned away have lived in the district in the past, and they still serve the district as volunteer FF/EMT's. And I am aware of other recipients who have been past residents of JT that assist in rescuing food, and they are not turned away even though they no longer live in the zone. I'm wondering, since these two serve the district, if they would be allowed. If not, I'll have the discussion with them and spare the volunteers. I'm sure even with the robust recipient response that there is still food going into the dumpster. Allowing them would serve the mission of the rescue and help folks who serve the district. RE: MOUNTAIN FOOD RESCUE - Matt Julie CK - 11-27-2024 All good info Chris! Thank you. I will bring this up to the board. But we certainly don’t want to turn away our canyon’s volunteers. For all reading this, at anytime, please feel free to contact me directly for a more timely response. Julie 720 two four 3-9 six 83 juls1320@yahoo.com |
