Xcel Notification????
Same with us a week ago or so....so annoying no notification and also all the random power outages.  Not an Xcel fan. Same happened to me, no notification and there was a huge hole in my yard with a piece of plywood over it that was spray-painted "Hole". That was on a Friday, I think, and then on the following Monday I came home to a new pole and no hole. They didn't use the same one, and I can't see how they filled in the old one - very strange. Oh well, they're replacing the power poles and that makes us a little safer, I guess.Nancy Farmer — 06:15 PM

Xcel Notification????
Came home this afternoon and lo and behold the old power pole on my property had been pulled out and new one put in. Still don’t know who did the job. Oh I failed to mention that I live on Rock Lake Road in Bar-K Ranch.R. Westmoreland — 07:46 PM
Xcel Notification????
Did anyone else find a door tag from Xcel, stating there would be a short outage for yard pole replacement, for yesterday morning? There wasn’t one, when I got home but a short time later it was there. I called Xcel and they said nothing was scheduled for my address. I know there is another company doing this work. Seems odd. This is Martha over in Gold Hill. The door tags we've been getting have a contact name/number. Our contact is RAY with Sturgeon Electric: (720) 812-7966.Martha — 07:33 PM
Barking Dogs
I finally got some bark collars delivered but they sent the wrong size. The ones I ordered said they’d fit up to 120 lbs , but the package was size small. I’m not sure how long it’s going to take to return and get the large ones . The bark collars Rich posted a link to were discontinued and I finally found some others that were affordable but wrong size . So far I’ve spent a couple hundred bucks on fines , collars and court costs . I thought I had plea bargained for combining the two cases , but no, I misunderstood or the DA didn’t explain it correctly. I postponed the last one until I can get discovery on the cases . It’s been tricky to get the reports and I didn’t have them for the first case . The animal control officer told me she couldn’t tell me which neighbors were calling but that they had recordings and logs on the barking and that they were sure they were my dogs . I’m noticing the part time dog across the pond is here today and he’s been barking a lot . I’ve been keeping mine inside most of the time and when I leave the house. How about you just come to my house and I’ll pay you instead of calling animal control and getting me a summons and then I don’t have yo go to court several times. I had to go three times already and they don’t even have the arraignment until the second appearance. This is costing me a lot of time and money for gas and I’m falling behind in my classes now . I’m pretty sure it’s newer neighbors calling because as all of you that have been here for over 20 years, know we’ve always had dogs barking in the Bark Ranch and nobody ever called me in before this past summer. I was confused about how the time was logged and thought it was 20 minutes of non stop barking and then after the second summons, I found out it’s cumulative, 20 minutes total per hour… could be several bark sessions added together. How are you keeping the logs? So I can time it the same? Also wondering if you’re using highly sensitive recording equipment? And if you even spend the cold days sitting on your deck with the recording device and keeping logs ??? I thought maybe people would spend more time inside during the winter months but apparently not… Please just come talk to me directly and I’ll pay you $50 if I’m sure it was my dogs . Very happy with RDS Environmental out of Broomfield. We asked them to come out and get our Radon levels low after SWAT had failed. Mountain Food Rescue Tonight 2/17
FOOD PANTRY TONIGHT! MONDAY FEBRUARY 17. 5:30 - 6:30PM Smaller pantry tonight- CFS was closed but still an amazing selection, expect limits on certain things though! But even more amazing is the synchronicity of the type of abundance that was provided today! The higher powers are doing all they can to make this JES chili cook-off the most successful school fund raiser possible :D Today Whole Foods provided our pantry with 400 lbs of ground pork (in 3lb blocks) and about 5 or 6 large tubes of ground beef (approx 10lb each) :D * check out pix below* Therefore- plan with a few neighbors or friends how to divvy up the large portions so each of you can bring a batch of chili to the cook-off!!!! ? The road to the pantry has a surprisingly slippery snap layer of snow -similar to Sat. snow. Please be careful! And PLEASE give extra room on the driveway/hill to and from the building. Seriously, people have slid. Also at the tricky slope from cemetery to lower main. besides the abundance of meat!!!! Still variety, and fun. Great produce, apples, oranges, lemons, limes, grapes, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, yams, , cucumbers, squash, and more! Plenty of fresh prepared foods, salads, single serving meals, salmon, BURRITOS, cheese, lot of sandwiches, etc. Dairy: Milk, plant based milk, yogurt. Baked Goods: breads, buns, cakes, pastries. Meat: Hey- we still have TURKEY ;) Frozen: Tofurky!!!!, tortillas DOG AND CAT FOOD!!! Lots of drinks, coffee, teas and an abundance of canned goods- start grab your ingredients for JT Elementary’s Chili- Cook-off!!!! Come rescue some incredible food tonight, don't forget to drop off some cash in the donation box and enjoy the somewhat warmer weather we are having! Pix of meat (figure out who your sharing with) Matt Julie CK — 04:28 PM

Alki - Bog White Husky Missing
Thanks John. He’s back! Somehow he got shut up in Banyan’s SUV! We are so relieved, I cannot tell you. I haven’t been able to handle him, before and since my broken hip. And we have been trying to get the gate fixed for 2-3 years since it was installed. It worked for a couple of weeks before we got Alki. He used to be so little! Can’t find anyone who can fix it and now the track is bent, I think from the recycle or delivery truck. Getting a collar with his tags today. I read the chip company has gone dark, do we will have to re-register him. Whenever I beg or bribe him to come, he looks at me with Wolf eyes, saying, I like it better out here. He will follow men inside, but I do t keep a stash of those. Any info on gate fixers?Marcia M — 10:22 AM

Community Safety
Good morning neighbors- Our district has from time to time attracted a certain element of mayhem, mostly because we are the first dark canyon N of Denver. It seems that recently we've seen an escalation in unusual call types, which always helps us stay sharp! Our responders are held to a standard of discretion where we will always protect the privacy and dignity of the Patients and families we serve. If there is ever a situation where we would want a community that we serve to protect in place, lock the doors and stay inside, or evacuate either the Sheriff Deputies or we will contact dispatch and ask that an Everbridge (reverse 911) message be sent. If you're not sure that you are registered with the county's Everbridge alerting system, you can check the Lefthand website under Residents and the Emergency alerting tab in that drop down menu, or you can use this: https://member.everbridge.net/453003085612231/login . You can list your landline and your cell phone so you can be informed for any incident type that may affect your residence if responders feel there is a need to caution or evacuate a community. Please take a moment and ensure that you are enrolled today! And as always, we are welcoming volunteers for emergency service (structure fire, wildland fire, EMS/rescue/HAZMAT etc.), you can find an application on our website as well under the Join tab! Cheers! ChrisO'B's — 12:02 PM
Free Pop-Up Camper
Hi neighbors! As I'm sure many have noticed, someone decided to abandon a pop-up camper on our place just downstream of town, and then last weekend's wind decided to flip it over.  We can't find any license plate or VIN on it, and after contacting the Sheriff's Office, we've learned that it is now ours to deal with.  So... I guess I'll ask the obvious question:  would anyone be interested in this camper?  We'd be happy to give it away to anyone who wants it and can haul it off.  The frame appears to be intact, so it could possible be converted into a trailer, at least.  Please feel welcome to drive over and take a look at it.  It can be found at 949 James Canyon Drive (just downstream of our home at 1126 James Canyon, with the green mailbox and garage project).  Those interested can reach me at 949.933.2140 or EricOHarms@gmail.com. BIAH #16 Important Dates
Hey, party people. Our beloved Band in a Hat is fast approaching, and I wanted to share upcoming dates with you all. Signups will go live in person on Saturday, February 15th, at the Cosmic Winter Wonderfest; Online Signup is Here. Band drawings will be held at the Merc on Friday, February 28th. We plan to announce the bands during the set break.  BIAH #16 will take place Saturday, April 12 @ 6 PM in Town Hall Our next ALL JAM Meeting will be on March 1. Feel free to drop by with any questions, learn how you can volunteer to help make the event a success, and JAM with us! Please see below to learn more about BIAH.  Everyone of ALL ages, styles, levels, and locations is welcome.  Sign up for ONE of the following INSTRUMENT CATEGORIES: BASS (limited slots available) DRUM KIT (limited slots available) VOCALS STRINGS (anything besides bass, including electric/acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, etc.) WINDS (anything you blow, such as horns, flute, sax, recorder, didgeridoo, etc.) OTHER (anything not listed above, such as hand drums/percussion, keyboards, drunk stick, kazoo, marimba, washboard, jugs, pots, pans, etc.) KID BAND (see below for details) At the drawing, a member is randomly chosen from each instrument category “hat” to form a band. Each band has 6 weeks to create a 30-minute set of original or cover tunes, theater, comedy, or whatever your band invents for the show on April 12th! This is just for fun and not for competition. Print very clearly your name & contact info for ONE instrument category per person (although you may play others and/or sing as determined by your band) and specify WHICH instrument you will play. Also indicate if you can offer a practice space (The JAM Hut is available for practice space if needed). Missing or illegible info may preclude you from the drawing. Please only sign for yourself. Two people from the same household may sign up together in ONE instrument category of the sign-up sheet (for scheduling and practice space convenience). Because this is a unique circumstance, both household members must decide on one category to enter while the other becomes a bonus band member. Each musician must be committed to having loads of fun, collaborating amicably with others, and attending scheduled practices. Please do not drop out midway! In the event of drop-out, the band may do what it takes to make a great set, such as continuing with the remaining members, calling in a replacement, or implementing other ideas they may have. All musicians MUST be signed up BY the drawing date (February 28th) to participate. SOUND PEOPLE are also needed. Please get in touch with us if you can help with sound! The ORDER OF THE BANDS at the show will be determined later, and all bands will be notified. KIDS-IN-A-HAT! ALL KIDS are welcome up to age 18 with parental permission. Children under age five must be accompanied by an adult to each practice and at the show. Sign up HERE and indicate the child’s name and age. Kids can but need not sign up for specific instruments, as interests will be determined during practices, and there will be many instruments to try! The kid band is not randomly drawn. After the drawing date, parents will be notified of the practice schedule and location. Kids must be committed to attending the practices scheduled by the band. Teens over 18 may sign up for an adult band as outlined above. Kids aged 14-18 with musical experience may audition to be in an adult band! Hat Contest for All! Wear your goofiest, classiest, or most creative hat to the show and win a prize.  For more info or with any questions, contact jamforthearts@gmail.commessa — 03:46 PM
WEST Mesa Street is a SHEET OF ICE !
I believe it was Fred's Propane that tried to go up the hill past my house at the end of West Mesa St. a few weeks ago, with no ice/snow chains, then he tried to turn around, it looked as if his truck was going to roll over. They really should chain up. Imagine a truck full of propane going over the edge...Hollis — 02:44 PM

Got this one today... Scam tries to get you to call the number and if you do they will try to trick you into remote control of your computer then stealing your passwords and bank info. Don't fall for the scam.... delete the email and never ever call anyone with regards to a phony bill, or some warning about you being compromised in any way delete delete delete. While, this one looks pretty fake and easy to spot there are others that are pretty darn convincing so beware.  Sal DeVincenzo — 01:09 PM
WEST Mesa Street is a SHEET OF ICE !
With all that wind and warm temps melting the ice, WEST Mesa St (The Glacier) down to the school is dangerously ICY!.   Be very careful driving or walking!  Fred's Propane could not make it up to deliver my propane.  YIKES !    We could use some sand to make the roads passable and safer! Hello! I was wondering if anyone has a whole house filtration system that they like? We are looking into getting a “simpler” carbon whole house filter and then an RO under sink filter for our water. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!Dkonter — 12:11 PM

Wind alert in the canyon
I just heard from a local that the wind is wreaking havoc in the canyon. There were branches, and a tree on the side of the road, and a large boulder just fell from high up right into the road in front of a car. No one hurt. And, that parked pop-up camper has been blown upside down. Keep your eyes and ears open!Annamaria — 07:11 PM

“We do what’s possible.”
In case this is as helpful for anyone as it was for me and with so much gratitude to all of the unfailingly kind and generous people in our amazing mountain communities. The resistance will not be rushed Resting up to join a peaceful, nonviolent, colorful and multigenerational opposition.   I am not sure what my role in the resistance will be, as my feet and right hip frequently hurt. Also, it was announced in the news beginning several hours after the November presidential election that the resistance is muted, and/or that there is no resistance. Democrats and the opposition leaders — of whom there are apparently none anyway — don’t know what to do.   But how could anyone?   When my mother fell into a steep decline with Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes in 2000, my two brothers and I met with a gerontology nurse. She listened to our grief, confusion and absolute exhaustion. How would we know when it was time to move Mom to assisted living? How could we keep her from bingeing on the rolls and cookies she was shoplifting from Safeway, which the checkers paid for because they loved her? How could we get her to take her insulin when she was so confused? And the nurse replied gently, “How could you know?”   This had not occurred to us. We thought we must be stupid not to know. She said, “You guys all need a good, long rest.”   I think we need and are taking a good, long rest. Along with half of America, I have been feeling doomed, exhausted and quiet. A few of us, approximately 75 million people, see the future as a desert of harshness. The new land looks inhospitable. But if we stay alert, we’ll notice that the stark desert is dotted with growing things. In the pitiless heat and scarcity, we also see shrubs and conviction.   Lacking obvious flash and vigor might make it seem as if there is no resistance. But it is everywhere you look.   It is in the witness and courage of the Right Rev. Mariann Budde. It is in the bags of groceries we keep taking to food pantries. It looks like generosity, like compassion. It looks like the profound caring for victims of the fires, and providing refuge for immigrants and resisting the idea that they are dangerous or unwanted, and reaching out to queer nieces, siblings and strangers and helping resist the notion that their identities are unworthy, let alone illegal.   It is in our volunteer support for public schools and libraries, because we know the new president holds them in contempt and fear. Teachers and librarians are allies for souls who have been dismissed as hopeless.   These unabashed do-gooders will definitely get the best seats in heaven, nearest the dessert table. What they have to offer — patience, companionship, poetry — is about to be defunded by the new administration, but not by us.   Resistance may depend on federal district court judges, but it will look like bake sales. Too bad my mom is no longer here to donate her stolen cookies, but I am here, as are all my friends.   They ask me for direction, because I am a Sunday school teacher, and they feel like children: “How will we get through the next four years?”   I tell them a few things that always help me.   First, I tell them what my Jesuit friend Father Tom Weston says when I call him for help when I feel craziest. After assuring me once more that he can counsel Protestants, too, if they are pitiful enough, and no matter the exact details of the latest calamity at the dinner table or in D.C., he always says, “We do what’s possible.” So we are kind to ourselves. We take care of the poor. We get hungry kids fed. We pick up litter.   Second, I tell them what Susan B. Anthony’s grandniece said. Also named Susan B. Anthony, she told her therapy clients that in very hard times, we remember to remember. Remember that the light always returns. Remember earlier dark nights of the soul, for ourselves, our families and our nation, when we fell in holes way too deep to ever get out of. Remember the Greensboro sit-ins and the march from Selma to Montgomery, the 2017 Women’s March, the coronavirus vaccine. Remember how in the desert, down by the arroyo, you’ll find dubious patches of pale green, maybe a random desert lily and, impossibly, baby leaves.   Molly Ivins would have told me on Nov. 6, “Sweet Pea, we got our horse shot right out from under us.” We did, and it hurts like hell and we loved that horse, and people are laughing at us. We need a little time here to decompress.   Now is a time of quiet. A passionate activist friend told me she doesn’t feel very resisty yet, but one thing that characterizes deserts is the stillness, until the wind blows. And, boy, when it blows, it’s like an organ. You can hear its shape and power because everything else is so still. How or when will the wind start up? How could we know? But it always does. Spring is less than two months away — warmth, light, daffodils, life bursting into its most show-offy self.   “Give me those far away in the desert,” Saint Augustine said, “who are thirsty and sigh for the spring of the eternal country.”   I can tell you this: The resistance will be peaceful, nonviolent, colorful, multigenerational — we older people will march with you, no matter our sore feet and creaky joints. There will be beautiful old music. There will also be the usual haranguing through terrible sound systems, but oh well. Until then, this will be my fight song: left foot, right foot, breathe. Help the poor however you can, plant bulbs right now in the cold rocky soil, and rest.   Anne Lamott from The Washington Post Jan 29, 2025.   Julia — 01:11 PM
SnakeBytes - Good Reads
I think there is a goodly share of Larry McMurtry admirers in town so wanted to pass this on.  I dug out my copy of his "WALTER BENJAMIN AT THE DAIRY QUEEN" this morning and started rereading it.  It's pretty much all about reading, writing, and story-telling and is full of pithy observations and musings on those subjects. While I don't always agree with his assessments, I  have a great deal of respect for his work and think anyone can glean some useful and thought provoking grist for the idea-mill. Give it a try. I think you'll find it dang good. SvHLynn Wilber — 09:29 AM

Ok now I am a little weirded. out. All 3 tucks are now parked in my circle with their lights off.....my dog won't stop barking! They are searching with a drone.
