Searching for help!
Mandy, I can take Acab half time.  I live near Derek, and Acab and I are friends.  The problem is that my wife is in Alzheimer's care in Boulder, and I spend half of each week with her.  She isn't walking very well, and I can't take him into her apartment.  He'd knock her down for sure.  He almost knocks me down.  Perhaps I could take him from Friday to Monday if someone else could host him the rest of the week.  I can be flexible as to the days. Searching for help!
Hello Jamestown, this is Mandy (Boulder), Kaynes mom. Dereck was in a car accident last week and is still in the hospital. When he is released this week, he will not be able to care for himself or the dog so i am searching for a short term foster or share responsibility to check on him. Right now someone is tending to the dog at home, but if some could rally together and help to take some pressure off of others, I would be so appreciative. Dereck has not retrieved his phone from the accident yet so he has no communication besides his hospital phone. I have taken over responsibility for figuring all this out so whatever help or advice is greatly appreciated. Dereck has a concussion, along with other injuries that keeps him from accomplishing a lot on his own. Unfortunately I dont have a lot of answers but having help with the dog for a month is a goal I am looking for. Dog info: Name: Acab Age: 4 Breed: Rottweiler mix Friendly with people, dogs and cats.Mandy Isaacs — 12:20 PM
FOOD PANTRY SEVERE WEATHER PROTOCOL
JACF FOOD PANTRY SEVERE WEATHER PROTOCOL On January 20, 2025 (tonight), the expected temperatures are predicted to be dangerously cold.  JACF will still hold the food pantry from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.  For everyone's safety, we are implementing a board of directors approved severe weather protocol for tonight as follows:  1.  Please do not walk to the Pantry on 01-20-2025 - the temperatures will be too cold for anyone to be waiting outside.  Please be extra careful driving, as the road is very icy.  2.  If you have a friend or neighbor who normally walks to the pantry, please offer them a ride or please reach out to a friend or neighbor to join them in their car if you normally walk to the pantry.  3. Please park your car as you normally would at the pantry.  Stay inside your car as long as possible with the heat on.  4. A member of the Pantry Volunteer Staff (me) will be outside tonight directing people into the pantry.  People will be invited in by car load.  There will be no lottery process for access to the Pantry tonight.  5. We will be allowing 5-10 people into the pantry at a time.  6. If you are shopping for your family, please limit the number of people you are bringing with you to shop.   Please also do not bring your dogs.  7.  If you are unable to adhere to this severe weather safety protocol, please stay safely home.  Thank you  Jamestown Area Community Foundation Cyndi Fitzgerald — 12:00 PM

ADOPT A REZ DOG: Henri
My foster dog Henri wanted to introduce himself! He's looking for a home and would be a perfect mountain dog. I'm fostering through https://www.blackhathumanesociety.org where some of our favorite JT/BAR-K dogs like Tupelo and Teddy & Wyatt are from!  If you have any questions or are interested in Henri feel free to reach out by text/call at 781-four92-four180 or reply here on the BB - Claire (foster human) Hi!  My name is Henri, I'm a little over a year old, and I've been told that I'm 60lbs of pure, certified lover boy! I was found on the Navajo Nation this summer and taken in by a nice lady who got me my shots and got me neutered, woof, not my favorite :dodgy:  . Anyway, I wasn't full grown this summer, but I am now! I just moved to a new foster home in Jamestown, and I think I kinda like it here! Someone said that I have "lab energy"... whatever that means! I just really love my people and want to be around them and have their attention 24/7 and maybe follow them to the bathroom to make sure they don't forget about me in those 2 minutes. I'm also super into this thing my foster human calls "couch," it's just so comfy so I spend a lot of time there snuggling by myself or ideally with foster dog sister or foster human. I sleep in a crate at night and I'm getting pretty good at going in on my own when it's bedtime, 2025 new year, new me! Did I mention I love people?! I just want them to pet me all the time, and sometimes I get a little excited and jump up for a hug, but I'm really working on it... and let's be honest, the humans want the hugs too. I ride pretty well in the car, humble brag: I've never gotten carsick on these canyon roads even though my foster mom drives like a maniac! Sometimes we go to breweries and meet people and dogs and have snacks after a hike, it's the best!  I also LOVE other dogs, literally every single one I've met. My foster sister Becky and I play all the time, and we haven't even known each other that long! I'll share treats with her but I prefer to dine separately from other pets for my meals, think mafia boss in the wood-paneled empty back room of a restaurant with a napkin tucked into my collar. I'm totally okay sharing my food with people, with some trust, stability, and training I really think sharing food around other dogs is something I can work on!  I need exercise to keep up my peak physical form... I mean have you seen how handsome I am?! I'd love a yard to run around in or someone that walks every day! Once I've got my exercise it's right back to the couch though... although I might need a few minutes of zoomies in the house before I settle down! I am a big fan of plush toys and soft things in general. I especially like clothing and shoes that smell like my humans, I don't destroy them I just want to bring them around with me to show how much I love you... and maybe get a little attention!  My history with cats and small children is mostly unknown. I spent a night at another foster's house on my way here and I was interested in her cats but didn't chase them, I can probably be trained to leave them alone.  If I had a theme song it would be "Somebody to Love" by Justin Bieber... I just need somebody to loooooooooovvveeeee!  Could you be that somebody?! If so, contact my personal assistant, I mean foster mom, Claire, to meet me or to get more info!     ceg9899 — 11:29 AM

Free Walking Machine with delivery
Dear Neighbors, We have a walking machine that seen little usage lately, and we would like to find a new home for it. It is an industrial quality unit, built by Smooth Motor Corp. Speed 1-10 miles/hour so it can be used for running as well.  It is relatively narrow, under 27" and the length is 68" so it does not require a lot of space. The walking/running  angle can not be changed. Has a safety stop and handle bars. It is a solidly built machine, which means it is very heavy. We are giving it away and also deliver it for free in the JT area, if you do not have the means to transport it. Cheers, BelaBela — 09:17 PM

Hello Area Community! Presenting CSC Program - Winter 2024/25 CSC Stands for Community Supported Café. Like Farms that have Community Supported Agriculture Programs, Mountain Cafes like The Merc also have seasons that you can support with your membership. The program works like this: The member pre-purchases 6 “Dinners” at The Merc to be redeemed anytime during the program dates, from January 15th-March 15th  Because your pre-payment helps with Wintertime overhead operational costs, in return, we are grateful to offer  your meals at a very discounted rate. Each Dinner Ticket includes an entrée, a dessert and two drinks of your choice. Instead of a total of $45, each Dinner Ticket is only $35, so your commitment to 6 meals comes to $210 plus a tip for the friendly irreverent service, to total $250 You have the entire two months to use your Dinner Tickets. You can come in six visits or come with five friends and use em up. The bonus is that you have a few fun nights out already bought and paid for during the dark winter months, AND it’s a good reminder to get out of the house and connect with neighbors and food and music and community. Buy as many CSC Memberships as you like! Have a big family or like to visit often? Grab a few memberships and save loads.  Just use em during the CSC Cycle. We pay the bills, the musicians have an audience, you get out and have fun, we all win. CSC Memberships can be purchased on the Merc Website under “Merc Merch and CSC” Jamestown Merc — 07:42 PM

The attached photo from LA’s Palisades Fire, published in today’s Washington Post, is a good—if terrifying—illustration of an ember storm. During recent wildfire mitigation efforts for our cabin on Ward St., we were encouraged by Wildfire Partners to think in terms of these and make our structures more aerodynamic, as it were, avoiding traps and eddies where enough embers could accumulate and start a fire. burtonwc1 — 03:22 PM

SCIENCE WITH STRANGERS
SCIENCE WITH STRANGERS! If you attended last year, you know it was a total blast. It also sold out very quickly, so buy tickets now if you’d like to join. Here are the details: At Science with Strangers, you RSVP and then are seated with people that you don’t know yet. Each Science Dinner revolves around an interesting discussion topic, where 3-4 Experts will give a very brief talk on their area of expertise regarding the subject, followed by a dinner course and conversation at the table. During dessert, we encourage everyone to get up and talk to new people, or friends that you came with, or guest speakers, ect. LAST Science with Strangers, we learned about and discussed the subject of “Consciousness” This Science with Strangers, we will learn about “TIME” Time encompasses so much of our perception. We have memories and future plans and grasp to hold onto the ever-elusive present. It feels like a one-way river rolling at a constant speed, but we know that time is actually relative to gravity, and the implications of time being relative are extraordinary! Without any mass, how fast could it go? Does all of time actually exist everywhere? Are we living in a “Block Universe”? If so, why can’t we go backwards? Is it entropy- or are we all experiencing an illusion of time together in a physical state that is simply one dimension of many? We likely won’t have all of my questions answered, but it can be fascinating to think about! Guest lecturers are being organized, after you sign up, you’ll receive a short description of the speakers and their area of expertise. Please specify when you buy an Eventbrite Ticket if you would like the Omnivore or Vegetarian Option and if you have any other dietary preferences. The menu is listed on the Eventbrite and we are happy to accommodate all restrictions. Each $65 Dinner Ticket includes dinner, lectures and one drink of your choice; Beer, Wine, Cocktail of the Night, Kombucha, Mocktail of the Night, ect. Extra drinks can be purchased at The Merc. You can purchase your dinner tickets with the link below: Jamestown Merc — 11:05 AM

water test
Debbie,  At https://bouldercounty.gov/environment/water/water-testing/, Boulder County Health recommends three commercial labs for testing of radioactivity in water -- screenshot attached. I have seen results from Hazen Research, but not from the other two.  I would go with Hazen because they appear to do just analysis, not treatment, whereas the other two companies do both, and I always get just a bit concerned about a company doing analyses that might lead to a treatment recommendation that they are selling. Joe Thank you!!DebAllen — 01:38 PM

Bar-K residents, I'm a professor in the Environmental Engineering Program at UC Boulder -- and a neighbor; Martha Russo and I live across from Rock Lake. I teach undergrad and grad courses in Water Chemistry and Environmental Organic Chemistry.  My research specialty is the "fate and transport of contaminants in natural water" and over the years, I've run a few outreach and research projects addressing water quality in the Left Hand Creek watershed.  I have been very interested in Boulder County's recent letters about uranium and radioactivity in our groundwater. I'd be glad to pitch in about anyone's concerns, here on the BB or by email (joeryan80481@gmail.com). One item I'd start with is to be cautious about getting water quality analysis results from a company that also sells water treatment equipment -- I'd want the water quality results from an entity that doesn't do the treatment. Another item is getting water quality tests after installing treatment like reverse osmosis (RO) or other filtration to see that the treatment is actually making the water safe to drink. Finally, if you do get some treatment system, make sure you maintain it (e.g., change the filters) as recommended. Joe Ryan Hi Joe, Thanks for the info. Who would you recommend for water testing? Mystery with our recycling
Our pre-Christmas recycling was just left at the top of our driveway on Ridge Road today. It was the one we attached a gift for Izick on. Gift is still intact and money is still enclosed in the card. We are so confused. Did someone pick it up and keep it for over the holiday? Thank you maybe? Or did our recycling roll down the street somehow and someone picked it up? Thanks for any leads, odd to see it appear today. Thanks! -Kelly Our pre-Christmas recycling was just left at the top of our driveway on Ridge Road today. Thanks! -Kelly Kelly, Izick works for Western Disposal (unless he switched to Green Girl?), so if someone else picks up your recycling, maybe they saw the card for him and knew it was not meant for them, so left it. But if your pre-Christmas recycling went away and came back again, that's a bit stranger! Nancy Farmer — 12:53 AM

Chaz & Rima Update
Hi friends, I wanted to let you know how the youngsters are doing down at Duke University in NC. First and foremost, thank you for your kindness to our family. The Go-Fund-Me campaign has hit the goal and more. Thoughts, prayers and reaching out with kind words are comfort as well. This has been a great relief and helped Chaz and Rima with the move to North Carolina. Damned expensive! Since this is Rima's second double lung transplant she has realistic expectations of the program and what to do.   They arrived on December 1st and immediately Rima started being evaluated for entry into the lung transplant program.  After two weeks of testing she was accepted into phase one, the Relocation Program, also know as boot camp. Boot camp is every day with few days off, thus relocation. She will not be put on the waiting list for lungs until she’s met her personal boot camp goals. I’m not sure what all of the goals are but gaining weight was one of them. After she is “listed” she remains in boot camp until lungs become available. Last time she waited 8 months. Rima’s network within the transplant and CF community has made the relocation easy. C&R had made arrangements to stay with friends for a month while looking for an apartment. However, within two weeks the network had found a single level, two bedroom townhouse within five miles of the hospital.  Rima’s sister, Laima, drove Rima’s packed car down before Christmas. They’ve got their clothes, pillows, blankies, and comfort items. Laima, who was Rima’s caregiver for her first transplant, has been a great help in navigating the system. She made sure all was well and then returned home to Colorado. She plans on going down to NC when it’s time for surgery. Duke has social workers, councilors and support groups for not only Rima but for her caregivers, (aka Chaz). They know I am always available for them. I'll go when they call. I expect to go help out with post op recovery.  Sending much gratitude and thanks to you. Now I’m going to cue up Tom Petty “The waiting is the hardest part.” Warmly, KateSt.Kate of the Canyon — 06:00 PM

Insurance company reviews often seem futile. With insurers dropping clients based on perceived safety, it’s hard to find one worth recommending. State Farm, despite its stellar reviews, recently dropped California and parts of Colorado due to potential losses. Realistically, if JT burns to the ground, we’ll all likely face prolonged disputes with our insurers, regardless of our loyalty or the company’s reputation. To them, we’re just dollar signs until it’s time to put them on a check. I just need someone to cover us so our mortgage company doesn't decide for us. Loyalty-schmoylaty It's business, and they don't care. Contact a local insurance broker, they know who's servicing our area, let them do the leg-work. I've been cancelled 3 times in 15 years, even with mitigation. Insurance companies take your money until they think they may have to pay-out, their reps are not your friend, they may be friendly, but that's about it. Good Luck!Hollis — 07:24 PM

After being dropped by State Farm suddenly, with the same “no trees/grrenery of any sort within 200 ft” we’ve had no issues with Lemonade insurance. Haven’t needed to put in claim so no clue how that would go, but our mortgage has been happy and lemonade has renewed us since 2021 without issue.Steph-and-DanielA — 03:43 PM

Keep me posted if you find something. I had State Farm and they "sent a letter" asking for my phone number, which they had. When we didn't receive the letter they dropped us without notice. There is an earlier thread about insurance I started a couple weeks ago you might want to look at that as there was a lot of good discussion.  I qualify for USAA and now a member myself but I did not qualify for their discounted insurance since my father who served did not become a USAA member.  They offered my their broker service and referred me to Liberty Mutual....I am little annoyed with USAA and their somewhat deceiving ads on TV.  I am working with an independent broker now and still awaiting a final response.  Currently with State Farm, my insurance nearly doubled with them recently.  Good luck!Greg and Cindy — 11:05 AM

Hi, When we tested 2 1/2 years ago, ours were 32.3 (alpha) and 10.3 (beta). Well is at 500’ (in bar-k). We use a RO called water drop (tankless) and it works great. Way easier to change the filters than the previous system we had which had a tank. As for those numbers, sounds like an outlier. Maybe request a second test to confirm? —tara calbeartara — 08:27 PM

Reverse osmosis water filters for under your sink are often less than $200 on Amazon and will take out, I think, radioactive elements as well as lead and fluoride. You can add mineral drops if you like or use a remineralization cartridge too. One of our local water experts can confirm. I need to replace the 20 micron filter every month, due to iron, but it’s not expensive. The other filters last from 6 months to 2 years, depending. FYI, when I tested our water 20 years ago, we had 3 times the recommended amount of fluoride and some lead, which is not safe for children in any amount. In case it’s helpful, I have this one, but there are tankless versions too and other neighbors have APEC brand and like them also. Julia — 05:35 PM
