What to do before the power goes out
#1
Lightbulb

Woke up this morning thinking about what today would be like without electricity.
Many upgrades on the grid but with really high winds
power may go out today and some may come home to a dark house tonight.

What would be good prep to do before a power outage / windstorm ?

  • Take that shower now
  • Bake that pie now
  • Park your vehicles away from (fallen) trees
  • Tie down or bring inside things that might become airborne
  • Test generator if you have one
  • Gather extension cords if you use them
  • Stock up on gasoline and propane
  • Camp stove or propane grill for heating & cooking
  • Stock up on firewood
  • Lower the temperature of your fridge and freezer (colder)
  • Fill up your cooler or your washing machine with ice
  • Stock up on batteries
  • Charge battery banks & connect mobile phone chargers
  • Install battery back ups to keep internet / communications going
  • Connect old school landline phone if you have one
  • Unplug power sensitive appliances
  • Know how to turn off your main water connection.
  • Fill water containers & bathtub
  • Grind your coffee beans !!
  • Flashlights
  • Headlights
  • Candles
  • Matches
  • Lighters
  • Connect with your neighbors
  • Remember your pets
  • Alternative power for medical devices
  • Emergency communication amateur radio or walkie-talkie.
(Please feel free to add to the list)
