Recreational Shooting at Stage 1
#1

Good morning neighbors-
The County Stage 1 restrictions are only for the west side of Hwy 36/Broadway at this time, generally speaking (there are a couple of areas east of 36 that are included). Recreational shooting is included in the ban, and here's where the confusion lies. In stage 1, campfires in set rings on private property are allowed. A private campfire is no larger than 2' around and 3' high, they are intended to be cooking or warming fires. In some areas west of Hwy 36, people have enough property to shoot on their land, and there are those who take advantage of that. However, even on private property recreational shooting is still not allowed. Commercial shooting lanes need to apply for and be inspected for an exemption to continue shooting. There is a good chance that this incident may have been someone who was shooting in the forest in a place where they have always been and felt like it was OK. The best course of action is to call Boulder County Dispatch. either 911 or 303-441-4444, and report shooting, campfires or other restricted activities. I recommend that you call early, there are only 2 mountain deputies and it can take some time for them to arrive.
