I took a mycology course way back in the last millennium, and my professor was repeatedly and profoundly adamant:
If you don't precisely KNOW what the species of mushroom is, NEVER eat it.
Guessing a mushroom's identity, regardless of how much it looks like a safe-to-eat mushroom, can be deadly. And too often has been.
