I got a pretty bloody dog bite up by Brainard
#1
On Thurs 19 Jan around 2pm I was snowshoeing up at the James Creek Watershed up by Ward.
That's the turnoff with the 1929 WPA bridge right before the Brainard turnoff.
I suffered a dog bite on the butt - it wasn't until I got home that I realized it was bleeding.
The dog was a big black one with curls, possibly a standard poodle.
It was with a twin black dog, and a smaller off-white curly haired dog.
A young woman had the dogs off leash, and saw me and my friend approaching
and was unable to get 'em on leash.   She called the dog Shiva, and wore a Celtic cross pendant.
She drove an old grey Toyota Forerunner.  I presume she was from Ward or the Peak to Peak area.
I didn't have the presence of mind to get her name or license plate.

I cleaned the wound, got a photo of it, and sent an incident report with photo to Sheriff's Animal Control Officer.
The next day, I went to the doctor, and got an exam and a tetanus shot.

In an incident like this, the law requires a 10 day quarantine for the dog, just in case.
I don't suspect rabies.
She and the dog were well groomed, but rabies isn't the only infection you can get from a dog bite.

The dogs weren't vicious - they were probably being protective.
But hey, dogs are unpredictable - even ones we've known and loved since they were pups.
Had a child been bitten, or an entitled yuppie Boulderite, the charges and lawsuits would be flying.

Three dogs is too many for any single human to keep on leash.
Quality food, veterinary bills, vaccinations, ID chips and time are all significant costs, and add a possible legal bill?
Times that by three dogs ...  Ouch!
I hope she does some soul searching, and she gets real about the responsibilities and hidden costs of pet ownership.
I pains me to say it, but the Humane Society can give any or all of 'em a good home.

I have no desire for retribution, to contact her, or "teach her a lesson".
She was embarrassed and apologetic enough.

I wish her well, and hope she figures this stuff out.
Would a friend please make sure she reads this post?
