Betty, as you surmised, that's typical of bear to turn over rocks or tear apart old logs and stumps to find ants or beetle larvae. The ant tunnels under the rock show what it was looking for.
Two months ago a bear knocked over an old spruce snag by the driveway that we'd put a sign on in the 1950's. The stump was full of ants. It seems the bear has returned at least four times since, moving and dispersing the old log a little more at a time.
I like that bears eat ants.
